Recent Recap: latter 2025

Equinox Watershed Seattle Georgetown Primal Spiral & Friday Harbor 1st Block
Primal Spiral creative studio evolved through its reactivation in 2025, starting up for a season and some at Make.Shift in Bellingham. I accepted an offer for studio space in Seattle Georgetown with the Equinox Collective Watershed arts neighborhood project, and transferred my Bellingham functions here. I also reopened in Friday Harbor, my island town address, on the first block from the ferry at [Parking Gate] 3. So now there’s Primal Spiral Seattle & Primal Spiral Friday Harbor, and at these places I can forge ahead with new writing, and receive creative company.

Seattle WorldCon 2025
Seattle WorldCon was a culmination of years of participation and contribution, and I’m so proud of my local SFF and writing community for hosting a world-class event that brought many of the amazing authors, artists, publishers, and fans that I’ve been hobnobbing with for the previous decade to our very own city neighborhood. Along with speaking on some fabulous panels, I hosted my first WorldCon dealer’s table, which was a cheery scene, and invited people to my Midnight Write-In Cacao & Tea Social Hour at Primal Spiral Georgetown.

There are some new poems just rolled out, a demiromantic 3-pack:

ELASIEL176CE: 12/21/25 print date
This story came together from ideas and processes that began some time ago, and was ready to step forth for publication after Bones of Starlight; I consider it part of a larger book, titled alwaysbeeneverwas, with other intertwined mythologies. In this separate photoessay-constructed form, it’s a Fantasy New Age Multiple Life Philosophy Erotica; for sale to ages 18+, only as an additional purchase to any other volume by the author, in print through limited in-person/author-direct distribution; with a look to a later-upcoming online release on: Only Fans.

I renewed with SFWA through 2026
I’m also renewed with the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association through 2026! Cheers to my second year in the professionals’ formal league.

Mid-WorldCon Snapshot

Hey, a lot has been happening this weekend.

On this wall at least, I’m a member of the pantheon that includes Naomi Novak, Rebecca Roanhorse, and Kinuko Craft. Only one of these four has not won an industry award, but this makes it seem almost like she has:

Above, Death Be Not Proud: Character Demises That Killed Us with Seanan McGuire, Matthew S. Rotundo, Sarah J. Daley, Valya Dudycz Lupesku, myself & a great audience.

Below: The Hero’s Journey For All Genders, with SFWA President Jeffe Kennedy, K.M. Herkes, and Tamora Pierce (also in selfie)

That’s Ireland/Scotland WorldCon organizer James Bacon, up there. And down below is my early Nebulas mentor, Joe Haldeman, upon recording a spot to celebrate the translation of two books into Chinese by SF World.

And because the city is its own character, here’s me with Chicago. Serenaded again.

WorldCon 80 / ChiCon 8 Schedule

I’m thrilled about this rich, juicy, officialized, WorldCon record 14-item program they have lined up for me at this year’s WorldCon 80 in Chicago, ChiCon 8. Feeling like a heavy hitter! Norwescon had me on for 13, so this might be a record paneling high for my whole convention career. For virtual attendees, my reading will be broadcast over Airmeet.

A mix of central topics and delightful diversions, I’m also honored to be sharing panels with childhood bookshelf hero Tamora Pierce, Seanan McGuire, Todd Gallowglas, Jeffe Kennedy, KM Herkes, and an entire solid pantheon of creative luminaries. Yes, someone at my local venue called me a luminary, and I’m still glowing over it. I also suspect that my reputation now precedes me, and someone may actually be reading my books.

SCHEDULE:

Death Be Not Proud: Character Demises That Killed Us
Description
Many deaths of beloved characters may propel story, but often they can feel squandered or haphazard. Simultaneously, well-written deaths rip our hearts out every time. Is there a “right” way to exit a character? Are there wrong ways—like “fridging”? Experts will look at how gender and race tends to influence how individuals are killed in speculative TV shows and movies, and examine what sorts of shows show death in all of its gory details, while others let us assume someone has died without showing anything.

Terraforming and Alien Life
Description
If we terraform a planet, what happens to the living things that evolved there? Would an “Earth-like” planet have living things we could live alongside? How might Earth life integrate into an alien ecology? This panel will contemplate the ecological impacts of making another planet more Earth-like.

The Hero’s Journey for All Genders
Description
Modern hero journeys are not created equal. Male heroic journeys often start with a scrappy underdog who comes into his own, while modern women’s heroic journeys hone in on their being acknowledged for power they already possess. How do journeys between male, female, and nonbinary characters differ? How is race a factor? How are they different in modern TV and film representations than pre-1990s? Are these gendered journeys mere cliché? What are some recent and historical examples that break the mold, and how does that change how they are perceived?

Walking in Platforms and Heels
Description
Many current fashions, as well as those from across media genres, feature characters soaring on heels, wedges, or platform shoes. If you are not experienced in the ways that your center of gravity, gait, and balance change when wearing tall shoes, it can be intimidating to try for the first time. In this workshop, bring a pair of shoes that you would like to practice walking in and our facilitator will guide you through the basics, as well as guiding you through some practice exercises. Folks of all gender identities are welcome to participate in this workshop.

Supporting Genderqueer, Nonbinary, and Trans Friends and Fans
Description
While some fannish spaces are welcoming for genderqueer, nonbinary and trans folks, many people whose gender identity doesn’t align with cultural norms still receive intrusive questions or are treated as curiosities and information sources rather than as fans. Gender-nonconforming panelists discuss pitfalls for cisgender folks to avoid, ways to support gender-diverse friends and acquaintances in fandom, and hopes for the future of fannish spaces.

The Super Scientists of the Multiverse Panel
Description
The super scientist is a popular trope across comics of all genres. Who have been the greatest successes in this area? Have there been any stand-out failures? Is it possible to write a true “super genius” scientist archetype without reducing them to an arrogant villain in waiting? Can intellect be celebrated without vilification?

Wee Hours Tea, Type(writer), & Chocolate

Last night I was busy throwing the abovenamed WorldCon room event. Here is what greeted people:

I did just happen to be given room 333.

Both the promo and the chocolate buffet got gobbled up.

The typewriter saw some unique contributions, including vintage WorldCon letterhead paper from 44 years ago.

I have one panel left at WorldCon tomorrow on the Phylogenetic Tree of Space Opera, with some greatly renowned authors. Catch us if you can.
